A cubic yard of Potting Soil covers approximately 100 square feet at a 2–3 inch depth and weighs roughly 1.2 tons under normal conditions.

Please note that soil will naturally compact and may settle by approximately ½”–1″ after rainfall or watering.

Potting Soil is best suited for container-based, raised, or indoor plantings where drainage, structure, and root development are critical.

Customers commonly use Big Earth Potting Soil for:

Potting Soil is a heavier bulk material, averaging 1.2 tons per cubic yard and becoming heavier after rainfall. Based on customer experience, average pickup truck capacities are:

• Small pickups (Ranger, Tacoma, S-10, Mazda B-Series, Colorado): 0.25 – 0.5 yard
• Mid-size pickups (Tundra, Titan, F-150): 0.75 – 1 yard
• Full-size pickups (Silverado, Ram, F-250): 1 – 1.5 yards
• Heavy-duty trucks (F-350, larger Ram/Dodge trucks): 1.5 – 2 yards
• Dump trucks: Recommended for full-yard or larger loads

First-time loading? We strongly recommend requesting a preload to determine the safest and most optimal load for your vehicle.

Bulk Potting Soil is typically delivered via dump truck unless otherwise arranged.

If you prefer delivery using Super Sacks, one Super Sack must be purchased for each cubic yard of material, in addition to the flat-rate delivery fee. Super Sack delivery requires a flatbed truck and advance arrangement.

Preloading allows you to safely determine how much material your vehicle can handle before committing to a full purchase. This is especially helpful if:

• You’ve never hauled bulk materials before
• You’re unsure of your truck’s weight capacity
• You’re sending an employee to pick up material
• Recent rain has increased material weight

Remember: It’s always easier to make a second trip than to repair vehicle damage. Safety is our top priority. Big Earth reserves the right to refuse loading if conditions are deemed unsafe.

Preload Process:

1. Visit the front desk at any Big Earth location
2. Let a team member know you’d like to be preloaded and specify the material
3. Leave a credit card at the front desk while loading takes place
4. Proceed to the loading area
5. Observe as equipment loads your vehicle
6. Return to the front desk to finalize your purchase
