Why choose rye
Ryegrass is preferred by professionals and homeowners because it produces a dark green turf which rapidly develops a strong root system, responds rapidly to fertilization, never needs pampering and is not subject to disease problems under appropriate conditions. Ryegrass performs well in a wide variety of soil types, including clay or compacted areas which are not subject to heavy use or foot traffic.
When to buy
For best results, buy rye seed and plant in mid-fall or when temperatures are consistently in the mid-70s. Determine how many pounds or 50lb bags of ryegrass you will need this season. Place your order online with Big Earth for in store pick up or delivery.
How much to use
We suggest the following planting rates when overseeding with rye:
Pasture Areas: 25-50 pounds per acre
Residential or Commercial Lawns: 1-2 pounds per 1,000 sq ft
Sports Fields: 3-5lbs per 1,000 sq ft

Why Choose Rye?
Permanent lawns like St. Augustine, Zoysia and Bermuda go dormant in the cooler months, typically resulting in brown lawns. A lush, green lawn can be achieved through the fall and winter by overseeding with ryegrass.
